Lon Nol
1970:
Sihanouk is deposed in a coup while out of the country. The prime minister, Gen. Lon Nol, assumes power. He sends the Cambodian army to fight the North Vietnamese in eatern Cambodia. Nixon viewed Sihanouk as unreliable in the fight against communism and supported the Lon Nol coup.
The Cambodian army weakens because of the North Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge movement.
