1975:

On April 17, Lon Nol is overthrown by the Khmer
Rouge as the rebels evacuate Phnom Penh. The
educated and city dwellers are forced to the
countryside to become field workers in labor
camps. The Khmer Rouge revolutionize Cambodia
by setting the clock back to "Year Zero." The
movement is a race purification process that also eliminates Western influences.

Khmer Rouge-fueled executions, torture, disease,
exhaustion and starvation cause an estimated
1.7 million Cambodian deaths.
